Dear Jennifer,
Last year, we told you about workers fired and harassed for trying to form a union at produce supplier Taylor Farms in Tracy, California. Since our report, Taylor Farms has agreed to pay more than $260,000 to former employees in compensation for violations of federal labor law, but the injustices continue. Taylor Farms has just announced it will lay off almost 200 long-time “temp” workers, all while hiring new employees at the same facility. Chipotle is one of the companies that purchases produce from Taylor Farms, and it could help stop these abuses in its supply chain. Please join us in calling on Chipotle to urge Taylor Farms to clean up its act! Chipotle claims to serve "Food With Integrity," but produce from Taylor Farms does not fit that bill. In addition to its illegal harassment of workers — mostly immigrants — the Taylor Farms facility in Tracy was cited for 70 health and safety violations in the last year, including a major chemical spill that sent 20 workers to the hospital. Unsurprisingly, it has also had to issue numerous food recalls for possible contamination with E. coli, salmonella, and allergens. Given recent media attention over food-borne illnesses at Chipotle restaurants, it should be very concerned about the disregard of laws that protect both Taylor Farms workers and Chipotle customers. It is time for Chipotle to ACT! Tell Chipotle to end the abuses in its supply chain and demand that Taylor Farms improve working conditions in Tracy! In Solidarity, Abby McGill
